How to Synchronize ZOOM H4 Audio with External Track

Saturday, November 21, 2009

It 'important to realize that even if the oscillators sample may vary from one another, they tend to be extremely accurate in time, we are referring to themselves. This means that if you know what the clock speed of your recorder audio''autres sample clock of the camera, so a single correction factor will both return path for the synchronization.

A simple procedure is described below, using freeware programs, for calculating the correction factor necessary for your particular record. Necessary programs (all free):

1) AoA audio Extractor --- (not necessary if you can extract the audio track from a video recording in your NLE)
2) Audacity , a free audio editor
3) Switch , a free audio file type converter

Step 1: Set up your camera and audio recorder next to each other, and start both running

Step 2: Make a good audio 'clapperboard' point by tapping a pencil firmly onto a hard surface, as close to both camera and recorder mics as possible. This will cause a fast 'edge' to become the reference point, which will be useful later.

Step3: Let both devices run for at least 10 minutes. 20 minutes are better, but not essential.
At the end of the period, (timing not critical), make a second similar 'clapperboard' reference point. Allow a few more seconds recording, and then stop both devices.

Step 4: Download the video from the camera, and the audio from the recorder to your computer.

Step 5: Open the video file in 'AoA audio Extractor', and extract the audio from the video. Convert this audio file (if necessary) to a 48KHz 16 bit LPCM (wav) file, using the 'Switch' program linked to above. This file will be your reference audio file.

Step 6: Open the WAV file saved in the previous step in 'Audacity' - a free audio editor.

It is now necessary to save only the part of the file between the two 'clapperboard' references, which hopefully stand out clearly (if you hit the pencil hard enough in steps 2 and 3!).

This must be done accurately, to within 100th of a second, or better.

Click and drag the file to highlight the beginning section, including the first 'clapperboard' waveform. Use the 'fit selection to window' tool (immediately to the right of the 'zoom' tools) to magnify. Delete as much as possible before the 'clapper' reference. Repeat the operation until you can clearly identify the first distinct waveform of the 'clapper' reference waveform. Click, hold and place the cursor directly over the first full (clipped) waveform, where it crosses the centre line. Delete every thing to the left of that point, by clicking and dragging to highlight, and then deleting with the scissors tool.

Step 7: Repeat the above procedure for the end part of the waveform, again using the start of the second 'clapper' waveform as your reference cutting point. In this case, cut everything to the right of your selected reference point (not the left, as in the first case.)

Step 8: It is necessary to record the exact length of this new cropped waveform. This information is listed at the bottom of the window, but in a rather inappropriate format. Locate the toolbar
at the top of the window, click 'Edit'-'select all' and then 'Effects'-'change tempo' . Note the length of the file in seconds in the right hand box (the left hand box is greyed out).

Record this figure. It is the reference file length

Step 9: It is necessary to convert the file recorded on the audio recorder into an identical format to the camera audio track, namely 48 KHz 16 bit PCM. If the track is not already in this format, open it in Switch, a free file transfer program, and select the output encoding as 48 KHz 16 bit, mono or stereo to fit your audio file. This program will then convert whatever format your input file is (MP3, WMA, 44.1 KHz PCM, etc) into the required 48 KHz, 16 bit format required.

Step 10: Repeat the procedures in steps 6 and 7 for this new file. Edit the 'clapper' points with as much accuracy as before, but notice that the 'clapper' waveform will appear different from the first, although hopefully with as clearly defined first ' zero crossing' point.

Step 11: Repeat the procedure in step 8, and you will notice that the overall file length is different.
Overwrite the original file length into the right hand box, and take careful note of the resulting figure in the percent change box. Make sure you record whether it is a plus or minus value - it could be either! This is the most important figure, because it represents the percentage variation between the two units.

Once you have obtained this value, simply apply it to all files recorded with the same recorder and this camera. Providing you can align the start of the file with a single 'clapperboard' mark, there is no need to repeat the rest. Simply change the length of the external audio file by the correct percentage value, to allow the two audio tracks to remain synchronised.

It may seem a long winded process, but it only needs to be done once, and could then save quite a lot of time, against the option of trying to align tracks manually in your NLE, in small sections.

You may of course wish to use an alternative audio editor, and the details of this precedure may then be slightly different, but the principle remains the same.

How to record live presentations by Zoom H4

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

The recording of a presentation can be difficult. Not only will you have the challenge of capturing the audience's questions, it is also generally have a PowerPoint presentation that everyone is watching, and the hum of a projector and a microphone that wants to enter a room. Although you can use a variety of digital recorders, digital recorders Olympus creaks a bit 'economic, like bacon frying in the worst case. (To hear a track record of a higher end Olympus digital recorder, listen to this.)

I experimented with other recorders like the Zoom H2 or Edirol or Marantz. I am sure that every time you start spending $ 200 on a tape recorder, the increase in sound quality.

The costs for my Zoom H4
I like the Zoom H4, not only for the sound quality, it also doubles as an audio interface for your computer. In other words, you can use the Zoom H4, a USB microphone to record Camtasia or Captivate tutorials - and the sound quality sounds great. And if you want to record interviews in person, zoom microphone to record the sound is better than many external XLR microphone (that plugs into it). But it is also possible to use an external microphone to put in front of someone. This may be preferable at times. Since the zoom microphones are so sensitive, they will get every movement of his hand on the device.

My method for recording podcasts with Zoom H4
In this post, I share the method I used to record my last blog and podcasting the presentation of a local chapter of the STC. Moreover, since PodCamp SLC salt, I want my document techniques. You audio recording might want to spend a few days to familiarize themselves with the Zoom H4. Do not worry one of the four skills of song.

Tip: I recommend to buy audio equipment from the professionals. They have a lot of personalized cards and peripherals, which may be necessary, and vendors have experience with audio, if you have questions about what to buy.

Define and record audio
1. Insert the SD Memory Card 2GB Zoom.
2. Adjust the zoom of a recording in WAV format.
3. Activate the phantom power zoom to 48 volts.
4. Adjust the zoom to the mic input, rather than omnidirectional microphones.
5. Connect the adapter Phantom zoom.
6. Connect the adapter omni-directional lapel microphone phantom.
7. Drag the Zoom in custom-sewn belt clip large and attach to your belt. Tie-clip microphone a few inches below the chin of the presenter.
8. Make a big sign that says "Please repeat the questions from the audience."
9. Each time the audience asks a question, make the sign you made in step 8.

Zoom H4 Handy Camcorder Secret Weapon

Sunday, October 25, 2009

I have not heard much about utilities The H4 for video, and it what I intend to explore. With the price of mini-DV camcorders and even HD consumer continues to fall, the only thing that separates (most) of their pro and prosumer cameras a lack of microphone inputs and the lack of a headphone output to monitor the audio.

One of the uses failed to H4 the Neutrik combined XLR and Inputs (with phantom power), make it an ideal front end to interface with cameras mics pro consumers. We are dedicated interfaces that do this, but the H4 The added value of being a digital recorder, so only are you able to use professional microphones and phantom power to them also an audio back-ups, as professionals. An added bonus can use the H4's headphone jack to monitor your sound.

I used this set up to run some test shots for a documentary I was shooting. I made a small diaphragm condenser in an H4 channel XLR input and a crown PZM entry of others. I used the condenser on a boom for audio primary subject, then place the PZM near the subject, but the frame to get the same sound with a little atmosphere of the room. In practice can run two small capacitors, or a lavalier and a microphone on an arm, or a lavalier and PZM, etc. The only restriction that both microphones have to run on phantom power (or not, you can spend the phantom power on or off the menu, but the problem is with both inputs Neutrik).

I ran the 1/8 "stereo line out from the H4 into the microphone in my camera (Panasonic PV-GS300). I was only able to monitor the sound after I performed a test and played again, but what I have heard in playback been fairly consistent with what I heard in the headphones while recording H4. Another added bonus I now have a way to back up audio recording to memory card H4. I shoot with a crew very small, so this feature cam really at hand, especially during changes of the tape. Even if you're saying your subjects to hang while you change tape can let the H4 run and catch any type of audio is not could be repeated after the change of the tape. If they say something really deep (that is) and simply not have the same power when they are asked to repeat it on camera, audio H4 still there, So, you've got something.

The H4 can Pro microphones let you use your camcorder for consumers, they give you the possibility to monitor the audio and you give a backup of your audio editing. This a bargain!

Zoom h4 awesome recorder, if you're willing to learn the in's and out's.

Saturday, October 24, 2009

I went with the Zoom H4 after using Edirol one a couple of times. I do not see a big difference between the quality sufficient to justify the registration of both a charge of $100 more.

I use this recorder to record the evidence for both a wind ensemble and a jazz quartet playing, and for a small package, even using the internal microphone, the quality registration excellent. I never had a problem with overloading the internal microphone, even when the Big Band jump on a chorus message. Also picks ups and downs very well.

Personally I see no problem with the interface. Edirol seems that the shiny buttons and pleasant, but his task to record the sound, not to look like a car of the future. One small complaint the shell looks pretty fragile. Sure to take care of it, if a college student living in dorms can do it, so can you.

Battery life is not bad, I recording for about 4.5 hours with two regular Energizer batteries. I still recommend getting a set of rechargeable batteries, if you intend to use this with any frequency. It can use the AC power adapter that packaged with it, but not What exactly convenient.

This next step really important to consider when purchasing this product. If you are not willing to learn to use the recorder, which involves reading the manual and do some trial and error to understand everything there, Then do not waste your time and money. It also involves learning to use some editing software that comes with the recorder present. If you do not learn to use it, you're really losing the potential of this fine product. For a device simple, eliminate the extra money for the Edirol.

Overall, produced very large. I used to make some recordings very useful for my ensemble, and has worked wonders so far.

Zoom H4 portable digital stereo recorder

Friday, October 23, 2009

Got the Zoom H4 recently and I really like. Easy to use, on the basis of stereo recording. Just read the instructions once. I wanted something that would allow me to record myself playing music in stereo high quality (. WAV or MP3), and transfer the resulting audio file to my computer. But then, without being overly complicated.

OK, The buttons are multi-function, but are easy to understand, and you can Always refer to the printed manual (which came with it), if you forget something. No, do not come with its own built-in speakers, but I like to use a headset or speakers of my computer better anyway. ( Can link a set of portable stereo speakers - like the kind that make for MP3 players - if you really want.)

The H4 far multi-track recording, and a host of other sophisticated things, but this complicated than I need. I wanted above all good, accurate recording of sound, and I got that, so I'm happy.

Zoom H4 really is a "Handy Little Recorder"

Although I have not had time to explore the aspect of this 4-track recorder (a bit misleading since in reality only record two tracks at a time, but I understand Can add files in a project to unite line tool in pi a file). My main purpose of this recorder was to use "field" as a stereo tape recorder for recording in the studio and given my students during lessons. This little gem works great. Can not find anything inexpensive that works equally well. I much prefer the technology of an SD memory card, which may have deleted files and reused, rather than a diskette that can be used only once. My only complaint with aging eyes The project must not have added the thick black frame around the display screen. Screen space have more meaning broader and more easy to read text. Other reviewers have complained about the "cheap" plastic feeling, but I feel, if managed properly this small recorder and robust. If your reality in professional recording studio and mixing probably need to go in the $2000 price range and look at Roland or Korg products (big and fat) in each case. I was able to purchace this through its retail price of $495 ($248).

Field general recording for that nice, but not comparable to the most M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96, at least not to me. The Zoom H4 has a lot of features that I did not try. I tried both the zoom and M-Audio sound and record the same M-Audio liked the best. Sound recordings Zoom was good, but there seemed to be a lack of high and the stereo field was no longer large compared to the M-Audio.

My tests were "out of the box", as the two units sound The M-Audio has won. That can not be the case for others, there may be other benefits for the zoom I need for my recordings. Zoom a very capable recorder, and can serve well.

I rate this excellent product. I held out for 3 months, after reading that the user interface been difficult to learn, remember some crash-and-burn failures with other products. After 3-4 hours with the tutorial (essential!), I find that the user interface very intuitive, the quality sound excellent, and the form factor perfect to connect my Stratocaster and disturbance to my rhythm section. Add in there the quality stereo recording of live performances, and I do not know how I lived without it.

Field recording with the Zoom H4

Monday, October 19, 2009

After reading many reviews on this nifty little machine, I decided to make an attempt to direct the production of sound, as the main recorder box. Compatible audio suite we decided to record 48 kHz / 24 bit. I know that the car specifically designed for film / TV recording field, but has done its job very well.

Advantages at first sight:
# 1: It does not weigh 8 ½ Kg (about 18.7 lbs.) what a Nagra IV used to.
# 2: No reels, no heavy batteries, no shoulder harness.
# 3: The recording quality and the S/N ratio are far above that of an open-reel machine and equal any DAT or HD-recording system.

So far so good. Since the microphone/gain controls on the H-4 are not accessible during recording, I decided to feed the audio (boom & radio-mikes) through a SHURE FP-33 field mixer and connecting it via two XLR cables to the H-4. Besides, one can NOT hold it in the hand and record through the built-in mikes due to severe noise from handling the machine.

I first had to calibrate the H-4 with FP-33 to see where my levels were, I started the 1-2 IN switch is at "L" and then calibrated the tone of 1 kHz at-24dB on the H-4. Why are low limiter mixer SHURE works OK for analog, but clearly exceeded the limit of 0 dB of any digital recorder causing distortion / clipping.
The dialogue came sharp and clear, but I still had to look at the peaks as the limiter H-4 does not capture accordingly. I have not yet understood whether the built-in limiter works only for the internal microphone (MIC) or works well the contribution (in 1-2).

I live and work in Costa Rica, so sometimes the "Latin Way" interferes with the normal production logistics me been used in Germany and the United States.
Production forgotten to buy batteries, gave me a strip of regular Panasonic Blu-Ones. WARNING! A set of two lasted about 10 minutes, enough for a scene, without risking the recorder to go "off-line" in the midst of a recovery. We just made the morning before (outside shooting), so I have some decent AA alkaline batteries.

Cons:
1. The more data you have on the SD-card, the longer the machine takes to fire up / load / initiate. I use an 8 GB Transcend card, which lasted me - in a "normal" 16-hour working day - for four (4) whole days and still had about 1.5 Gigs left over.
2. The XLR inputs do not have the usual safety latch. So, if you are moving around, be sure that your cables are always plugged up to the hilt. And, re-check them before you start recording again.
3. The readability of the display is poor in daylight, and so is the status-light of the "Record" button. Is it on? Is it recording? One has to monitor the output of the H-4 directly so one knows at least if the machine is "off".
4. I upgraded the firmware immediately after getting the H-4 to Ver. 2.20. Still it takes up to an hour and a half to download, via USB, about 1.5 Gigs of audio (Vista Ultimate / 2 Gigs of RAM / fast 500 GB HD).
5. The Zoom H-4 has a twisted learning curve. It takes some time to get used to the two kinds/options of menus. But that has been discussed at length in other reviews... (see those).

Overall I am surprised by the quality excellent recorded sound. I also made a couple of recordings of a mariachi group, using the built-in microphones, and at home I was amazed by the freshness and the resolution stereo field.

So,, leave your bulky machines at home, and begin using the H-4 for recording field. ... and saves about U.S. $750 compared to other SD-digital recorders.Do not forget the clapper, why otherwise you are going to be in trouble trying to synchronize audio with video post-production.

Great, cost-effective, Handy digital recorder

Sunday, October 18, 2009

I was very impressed with the H4 recorder to date. Contrary to what some reviewers have said, I found VERY user-friendly interface and very intuitive, once I started using it. I looked at the book for ~ 1 minute before use, and it was immediately up and running, without further assistance.

Before purchasing the H4, I read a series of reviews to compare this product to its competitors, including the Edirol R-09. I was worried because such judgments made sound like the interface for the H4 been kludgy and / or difficult to manage. Eventually, I decided to buy the H4 anyway, why, A) all the reviews said the quality sound was great (which much more important IMHO), and b) been at least $ 100 cheaper than the competition. I thought, if the quality sound was good, I could understand the interface. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by both.

I find the H4 easy to use, and the quality sound excellent for the price. The only thing I want control fine-tuning of the level of microphone input. The simple L / M / H switch ok, to make setup fast and great, but I wonder what it would be like to be able to have greater control over these levels mic. (On the other hand, a) I love the cost of the H4 compared to competitors, and b) if I did have more control, you probably spend more time fiddling with levels, and less time actually recording ...)

If you are looking for a great, portable, easy to use, low cost and the digital recorder, I would recommend the H4. (Oh, and do not forget, this is also with Cubase.) If you want to see one of my examples of using the H4, I have a video that was recorded using the H4. I recorded the video using a camera Logitech PC, and the sound on H4, and then combined using Windows Movie Maker.

Zoom 4 great Sound Quality, And That's Just The Beginning

I bought this product as an upgrade to my archaic portable recorder, and I must admit that after three weeks of using the Zoom H4 I was not disappointed. Live entertainment, spontaneous jam sessions, or just scratch tracks playing on an acoustic guitar all the great sound, and I have not even begun to play with the 4-track characteristics. Really captures the sound room well, and this can be fully used with good settings.

If I have no complaint at all, of colic the same as the others grow, the interface could be slightly more intuitive, and could have been designed so that it would be easy to pop the memory card, where you don 't run the risk of potential damage. Still, with the quantity things that this product able to do, and the price currently on sale, can not be beat.

Friday, October 16, 2009

First of all this product exceptional complexity for its price, there are many better recorders l out, but the ratio quality-price on this product excellent.I would like to address some of his positive traits. It 's very easy to use, the construction of mics sound pretty good, the battery life very good for 2 AA, audio recordings in general very good for a unit at this price.

I like that do not have a built in battery or a battery of property so you can quickly and inexpensively be replaced on the go. I would like an indicator of remaining battery for replace the batteries before you start recording a long that can take to kill them.

Microphones sound decent even though it seems that the lack of low end and are a bit crunchy high end of what a small hard. It works well in many applications, but to record things as quiet environment in which the gain has to be lifted up, somewhat hissing noise in the recording. I also noticed that recordings are very slightly accelerated when you play again, the voices sound acute than they were and I assume this would be a huge problem for music since the change the notes you're playing and make it out of tune.

The firmware works well and does not crash on my experience, even if the record button has a delay when starting and stopping the recording. Furthermore, the navigation through functions could be better designed, but not horrible. One thing that does not make me nuts that every time you turn the unit recording back to the default. I always record to 96k/24bit and I put it back in that setting before each use.

The overall design looks and feels cheap, plastic seems easy to break (but at this price I'm fine with that), but the microphones seem firmly mounted in place and are protected by a sturdy metal bar in order to not smack them on something or the stock market crunch. it feels nice in hand and very light. Also the buttons seem cheap, but I know someone who has had one for several years and still work well. Just be nice and you should be fine.

Another thing to note that the microphones are very sensitive to wind noise. Always use the windshield outside, though in an average wind will still roar. This predictable even if it have a problem that afflicts even the microphones expensive. Just be sure to use the screen and maybe even bring a lightweight fuzzy socks or something like that, as additional protection from the wind.

Two time's a charm!

This is my 2nd Zoom portable studio; have had the PS-04 for several years now but it was very limited due to the small memory card (128mb) and no USB cable connectivity, although it has a nice built in drum machine with many, many pre-programmed styles. It was more for capturing creative riffs or ideas not really doing serious recording.

However, the H4 is much better. My only complaint is the small LCD screen and with these aging eyes I have to wear glasses to read the display, otherwise a sweet device. Still exploring all it does and have not yet loaded the Cubase LE software as I use ProTools LE already. What I most like is the ability to connect to a laptop and use it as a portable studio to record gigs or demo CDs for friends.

A good handy recorder for the Money

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Initially, I had problems with the recorder of interfacing with the Mac and I had to go to the website ZOOM (in Japan) and download the file needed to get my Mac Leopard recognizes the H4 as a USB drive. The only problem was that I needed a Windoze machine to upload the file to my SD chip. To work around this problem, I put the chip in an SD card reader (you can find for $20) and upload the file that way. When done, my Mac Leopard recognized the chip card.

Before me all this, and waiting for my card reader to get there, I played the H4 directly Garageband 08 through my source of input. I was able to play my changes needed with GarageBand and adjust the sound and volume accordingly. H4 have Cubase LE 2.0, is OK, but only 2.0 and version up to 4.0. I did not see if Cubase can be upgraded at no cost because I did not use it.

I use the H4 to record the readings and homilies for our site as a pod cast. The process of capturing the sound as an MP3 file, transferred to iTunes and then use iWeb to publish your pod cast fairly easy after learning the proper way that the Mac needs to copy and transfer files.

The H4 features two ways to record the sound you choose, WAV and MP3. If your looking for a quick and dirty recording and audio transfer. MP3 the only way to do it. If your a purist sound, you must recording in Wav. The only problem Most computers can compress the WAV files to MP3 or MP4 to play. So your purity lost unless you purchase a program to save the wav file in its raw format. Wav also a lot more memory both the SD chip and consequently on your computer.

Really, H2 more likely need anyone to record in real time. The H4 had the possibility record 4 channels, which can be complicated if you do not need this ability. The cost difference between the H4 and H2, based on shares today does not very different.

Zoom h4 close, but no cigar.

It works, and it nice gadget, but the controls could be a bit more intuitive. The fact that you must press twice to record a reality a kind of record lame, and the fact that, in order to change the SD card you must remove the battery cover even more. And why hell not possible for someone to create a 4-track that a real manual in English. We requires a mind reader. Still, the sound good price right.

Don't Try Synching This Audio with Video

Monday, October 12, 2009

For some reason, the internal clock used by the ZOOM H4 is a bit off the "true" clock. What this means is, if you video tape an event or something, and at the same time record the same audio with the ZOOM H4 (using it as an additional audio source) the audio files produced by the ZOOM H4 will NOT SYNCH with the audio/video produced by any MiniDV Camcorder!!! The H4 audio runs slightly faster for some unknown reason. The manufacturer acknowledges the issue, but can't fix it. Which means all of your audio is actually playing back at a slightly different pitch than what was originally recorded. To me, this is inexcuseable for a product prioed this high.

Excellent product - Only 2 drawbacks

Sunday, October 11, 2009

This was my "professional" quality recorder, and i am amazed at what it can do.

Pros:
Versatile!!!!
SD card memory
Runs on ac adapter, usb power, or battery power.
Record stand alone or as a computer interface
built in microphones are FLAT OUT SOLID.

Cons:
SD card is hard to take out
size - its a little large to use for recording yourself with a clip on mic and the recorder in a pocket if you use it for that setting.

These are very small negatives though, overall i love this product.

Zoom h4 great recorder at a great price

Saturday, October 10, 2009

I bought this recorder to record live classical music with external microphones that require phantom power. While understanding the interface and menu items was a bit embarrassed relatively easy to use. We what really amazing on this recorder the clarity of sound, wide frequency range and the ease transport of audio files to my mac. Some guests may not like some features of this recorder - which is made of plastic, SD card and batteries a little hard to reach, etc.. - But for the money a package of just amazing. I've been really happy with it.

Zoom H4 weird package but great features and sound

I read all the reviews before buying this thing and I was worried some of the first people who were having problems with it. Most firmware related, much was fixed, they are provided with version 2.2 , as the level of setting memory card problems, and conversion errors are gone.

The battery with 2500 mAh was 6 hours! 8 gig cards actually work. The batteries are in a bad place and if you need to exchange your card, then you lose the settings menu ...=( funky while Was quite easy after a while. Headphone volume could be better. USB 1.1 quality sucks audio at 96 kHz with built in microphones are phantom power microphones very clear great job. And he does it really record at 96kHz. reviewer has previously said that.

Zoom H4 nice unit

Friday, October 9, 2009

I bought this recorder on the recommendation of some friends on a forum I frequent. It 's was purchased primarily for recording practice sessions acoustic and classical guitar. The internal microphones are very sensitive and pick up very well. I have not tried the external microphones on it yet. The capacity record an MP3 file very convenient and easy to send via internet.

Things that could improve the unit include:
It would be nice to have an integrated speaker for the preview. There is standard-size iPod ear jack can connect to preview and playback, but other than that, you have to take the card and connect it to your computer, etc. to hear back.

Removing the SD card difficult because of the right placement of the batteries. It hard to get ahold of the card. You also have to open the battery compartment to achieve and the batteries are mounted so as to freely use the gravitation cannot help with the card or the batteries fall. Both boring.

All in all, this is a unit beautiful and worth the money. It has many features that will not probably never use, but the quality of recording for my own use exceptional.

Zoom h4 great value and makes what is said

Thursday, October 8, 2009

Product was surprising. I use it to record my band test in a study of the evidence that New York has acoustic. My only complaint the mountain useless. What I ended up doing Buy a cup holder that goes in the microphone stand and just stick H4 in the stand and then place the microphone stand, as required by the study. So we just play with H4 up in mode MP3 with your microphone stand aboard H4 straight into the hold cup. Balance nothing less than amazing. We play rock with a strong enough drums, bass and two guitars.

It also seems great recording an acoustic guitar with me singing. So either a very strong group or session sound great. I have not even bothered to use any external microphone, since for what I do with it, the onboard's work great.

The H4 easy to use for recording. However, I have not used for multi-track or have used any of these effects. I just stick in support for the band in studio, or the position in front of my acoustic at home, and press record. In both cases I get a great sound.

One thing I would like to see a pedal so I can start recording without having to walk to the H4. But this a small disadvantage for everything to does for the price.

Finally, the USB connection works great. After a session of 20 or more songs, I just connect the USB cable and copy the files on my PC.

Bottom Line: A great value, simplicity of use, excellent audio. Buy it. And if you do not need real high quality audio and can record to MP3, memory included enough to record 15 hours or more, so do not even have to buy something more, once you get it.

Zoom h4 is finally, the device I've been waiting for!

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

This an extremely useful tool as a composer. I use it when they are sitting around playing guitar without a goal at home. It's So Easy to use and a great way to ensure that good ideas do not get lost. I used to have so many ideas ranging b/c I would forget or why was too much of a pain to record, now I can only activate this option, put it in your room and play without worries.

The quality recording high bit rate even more low, non interference digital. And, I'm amazed that quality recorded with a band during the recording in the round (using only the built in microphones). It is very easy to drag files off my PC and work with them. I like this thing and I do not even think I took advantage of 80% of its features. I can not say enough good things about it.

The only complaint I have less buttons/controls are a bit clunky, but once you figure it out not a big problem at all. I also fell once and you saved as a sample. Stop thinking about over and buy this, you'll be glad you did. I have not compared the other l out, but after a month I know I do not need anything else.

My Zoom H4

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Surprising that many features that can be packed into a device as small as. Records are able maximum 1.5 hours of live music at 48 by 96bits/sec on an 2 SD card . Fedora 8 recognizes it without any problem as another sound card. I really like being able to plug instruments and microphones directly and use the effects. I recorded large field off the microphones and I've never taken anything in yet exhausted the battery power, even after recording for 3 hours straight.

Cons:
A steep learning curve to get good recordings out of it. Duration an issue that concerns me with the cover to the battery and SD card seems fragile. You can record only 2 songs at a time that great to do the recording single track, but not for live multi-instrument separation, when using all 4 tracks would be preferable.

Zoom h4 great Unit (even if it seems flimsy)

Monday, October 5, 2009

I had this unit Zoom H4 since last summer and it worked perfectly. The quality sound impressive, with excellent bass and crisp high full. I used for some live performances, but mainly for a back-up vocals tracks then fix later.

Once you understand the navigation, you can easily make high-quality stereo recording or multi-track recordings in Wave or MP3, high quality (which sounds almost the same for me). Direct recording of MP3 files of high quality makes editing on your computer a breeze.

For the manufacturer, I would recommend up degree plastic body shaped like even more control large. So far, nothing broken or malfunctioning for me, but more controls would be great would increase the usabilit and make this a better deal for the guys with big hands (like me!).

Zoom h4 very good digital field recorder

Unlike some others, I found no difficulty all to begin with the recording, and I just peeled the manual. Different uses have different requirements, however, for the uses I have in mind, the only concern I have the usabilit tiny text on the display.

(I'll only need to bring my reading glasses ...) I have not tested objectively sound, but subjectively I think the sound Very good, really better than I expected. The quality construction seems a bit flimsy, but with due caution, I expect it to last.

As far as removing the SD card, difficult to do by hand - I use a clip that I took part and reassembled pieces of wood reversed (useful for many uses).

Zoom h4 nice sound, poor construction

Saturday, October 3, 2009

I found the sound to be quite nice, but the piece itself left much to be desired. Feels only the light and convenient. All of its plastics and switches are all feeling cheap.

The interface little confused ... non very intuitive. This a small thing, but in the end really bugging me: when you press the record button, do not push at all.

There are no feedback from the button at all, so you do not know if been pushed or not. Just look at the display and understand the numbers are minuscule running.I wish that I liked, but I do not.

Exceptional performance and functionality

This one of the few recorders that can record in various formats: WAV and MP3 files with sampling rates up to 96kHz.Phantom integrated and XLR inserts for external condenser mics. Even the internal microphone is exceptionally high, and I did not feel the need use more Mic's.

Also a function of 4-track recorder and can be integrated with Cubase or Nuendo to interface audio.I use rechargeable batteries on mine and never have to change them for a standard use of 4 hours. Using variable bit MP3 recording with a 2 gig Compact Flash Card will take you over 13 hours of recording. Incredible.

I love this unit. The only negative about it that the plastic casing and controls are too cheaply made and I think that could lead over time. Furthermore, the attached tripod mounting a reality a separate piece that attaches with Velcro. I believe that something more substance needed here. Also would be nice if a case inserted, or something similar to a microphone if it was ok.

Interface functions are excellent. I regularly use the level of manual settings overide line and have had excellent results with live recordings, and rehearals for the band. Also recorder great acoustic guitar.

I believe that nothing compare with this device in its price range. It been a trully well designed device that blows the Edirol, Sony and others away.

Zoom h4 professional digital recorder

Friday, October 2, 2009

I was looking for a professional level product to create digital audio files in WAVE or MP3 format either. The ZOOM H4 seems to be very good ballance that has XLR connectors and works with either Mac or PC.

The unit casing is a bit cheap, but works fine flimsey. Another common theme is that you can use to convert any USB Microphones analog to a digital source.

It would be much better if allowed all four channels for use for wired outside sources, how it will record four channels, but only two can be connected the other two are from the built in stereo microphone. This a little unclear when one reads the promotional material that sounds almost like a full featured 4-track recorder will not.

Zoom h4 good for what I want

Thursday, October 1, 2009

H4 I bought a couple of years ago, I wanted a convenient four-recorder. not ok for this. I think that for the multi-track recordings (what, I play all four songs one at a time) this does not best device. However, use as a stereo device for recording field has worked well. I was replacing a worn minidisk, and this was the best I could find. I still have a little as the minidisk (Sharp) improved somewhat, but the H4 does not have a good quality sound with the built-ins.

I am not an electronics geek, I am an almost-60 female who loves to tinker with things and that reasonably computer literate. H4 had more "features" than I ever wanted, what record brass (such as a brass quintet) and occasional strings. So I do not need or want to find guitar effects and having to pay for those features of a pain.

Screen difficult to read. The manual decipherable, but only with the study. I never understood why do not just take the time to do it in English instead of translating any language is. How, why do not want to make it user friendly for people who are not fanatics electronics. Maybe the rest of us would be able to understand it too.

All of us that said, the quality of recording, with the construction of microphones was better than I expected, even the tuba recorded well. Not professional-sounding, but you need a microphone $10k to do professional sound. It did not look any better with my $400 stereo microphone, so I just use the built-ins. I used a tripod about ten meters away from the quintet.

Easily transfer files to my Mac and I can put together what I want in GarageBand and even cut a CD if I want.

I'm not worried about the weak-ness of it, I am old enough that I did not expect to take a beating. It frustrating to try to read the small screen that small defined or well for the big eyes.

Zoom4 Zooming into Music

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

After waiting two weeks if finally arrived. Most other reviews were pretty accurate. The screen is way too small and hard to read. Sound quality is very good even at the lowest (MP3) level. The case seems a ltttle chicny but ask me in a year how it old up. It has many features I have not yet tried. For an extra C Note maybe the Edirol is a better product. The down side of buying off of the net is not being able to try item out. For now I am satisfied with the Zoom.

The Zoom4 recorder makes magnificent recordings and is a marvelous device. I found learning how to use it efficiently to be rather challenging and the learning curve is rather difficult (as with many new electronics these days). However, once the operating concept is grasped, recording becomes fairly routine, and uploading it to your computer is a snap. I heartily recommend this product!

the sound capacity and versatility I find it to be in first class. That said, the oddnesses which owns are in his user interface (rather small screen, and a non-intuitive joystick control as a double button and jog wheel combo) and its user manual, which has a lot of references to other sections in each section that you are reading. 2) serves as the audio interface to Skype, etc to take the burden from my deteriorating internal microphone (what time audible collecting my fans of the computer).

A friend recommended the Zoom H4 Handy Recorder, and I could not be more happy. The interface intuitive, the quality great, and it provides a huge number of options.

Although the display small and a bit behind the times still readable (and backlit). I also ended up spending an extra $10 on a small tripod I was able to mount the recorder next to my computer when I use it as an interface.

ZOOM H4 Handy Digital Recorder in used

The operation of H4 requires a lot of button presses - competitors as the unit Edirol R-09 Flash Recorder. For example, to connect an Edirol R-09 USB port of a computer, simply connect the USB cable. With the H4, also needed to go to the menu, jog up to USB Press the jog, trot up to Connected to the PC and press the jog. To be fair, the H4 should have different menu choices, because it versatile.

Setting levels with the H4 a big operation. With the Edirol R-09, can set the recording level by pressing the up/down level. With the H4, you select Input Menu, jog to level and select it, press jogging, jogging and level up or down. What can be a pain when you record in the industry and the need to make adjustments quickly. On the other hand, the level H4 provides automatic scanning, which sets the logging level for you. Unlike constant automatic gain control, Simply set the quantity gain needed based on the level of the received signal, then leave the gain alone.

How does sound H4 Using its internal microphone, without processing, the H4 been very good for the price. I recorded an acoustic guitar quite a foot from the microphones. Rendering broad and clear with a little 'high-midrange emphasis. Some quiet background noise was audible during playback, so you do not laugh T use the H4 microphones for studio recording internal critic peaceful means. But the sound certainly usable.

checked the sound of the H4’s mic simulator, which tailors the frequency response of the internal mics to sound like a Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD-421, Neumann U 87, or AKG 414. I thought that the simulation was well done. It's amazing how good those internal mics can sound when tuned like a 414 or U 87!

Being cardioid, the internal mics pick up a lot of handling noise. As long as you don’t make any adjustments or move your fingers while holding the H4, you won’t hear the noise. The H4 can be mounted on a mic stand or tripod, thanks to the supplied strap-on platform with a 1/4-inch 20 threaded insert.

I did an A-B listening test between the H4 mic preamp and a Mackie 1604 VLZ mic preamp. I connected two Neumann KM140 mics first to the H4 mic inputs, then to the Mackie preamps feeding the H4 line inputs. I played an acoustic guitar one foot from the mics. I stopped playing a few times to record the background noise in my quiet studio. To my ears, the Mackie had about 3 dB or 4 dB less hiss and a little more detail than the H4. Also, the H4 mic preamp’s signal had a low-level 700 Hz tone, which I heard with internal or external mics at high gain, with phantom on or off. This tone would be inaudible when recording a rock band at low gain.

Final: The Zoom H4 is more flexible than competing units, but as a consequence, it requires more button pressing to operate. It offers good sound and lots of features at a very low price.

Zoom H4 handy indeed

first the bad :
the switches (side-panel on the right) for "gain lo-med-hi" seem easy to break and are difficult to put in the middle position.the pushwheel (also on the right side-panel) seems fragile too.
i find it very difficult to remove the SD card (it doesn't pop up high enough), so rather than use tweezers i just leave it in there and transfer the files over USB.the usage is awkward at first, you navigate using the center button and the pushwheel, which almost requires two hands.
the center joystick button has two menu-navigation purposes: pushing it in is basically a back/clear button, and pulling it down gives you access to the input menu. the rest of the menu-navigation (and selection) is done by the pushwheel.
maybe this is a good thing because it allows you to still use the joystick to control the music (play/pause/record/ffwd/rew) WHILE you're navigating the menus.
unfortunately, many of the menus don't wrap-around (so if you scroll to the end of a list before deciding you want the first item, then you have to scroll all the way back to the beginning).
the volume wheel controls the 3.5mm "headphone" output, but has no effect on the 3.5mm "line" output; no big deal, you can get around that using a 2-dollar splitter (so two people can listen with headphones, for example).

now the good :
the product does everything it says it does; i find the recording quality excellent considering the size and cost of this thing.
i also use it as a headphone amp for my electric guitar (of the 50 built-in effects, there are at least five that i use frequently).
battery life is good, you'll want rechargeable batteries ofcourse.
once i got used to the user-interface, i found this product very satisfying.
although it could use some design improvements, i consider this almost essential equipment for a musician, and very useful for a bunch of other people, including bootleggers, podcasters, lecturers/students, or anyone who wants decent quality digital recordings for under 300$.
(maybe students recording lectures would be better served by the zoom H2 or other mini-recorders that you can find on www.thomann.de)

i bought this product directly from amazon, free shipping, order tracking, zero problems.
i also bought a sony AA/AAA battery charger with LCD display and discharge function (model BCG-34HRMF4) with which i am VERY pleased.
and a couple of 2 Gig SD cards.
note : i read that the H2 and H4 are not compatible with the 4 Gig SD High-Capacity (SDHC) cards.

i have not tried the zoom H2 yet, but i don't think i'll buy one because for me the H4 is portable enough.
but i don't need to test the H2 to recommend the H4 over it; the H4 is just so much more versatile, can do so much more for musicians, and has better mics anyway.

Zoom H4 Good all around performer

Saturday, September 26, 2009

The Zoom H4 has performed very well for me in recording live music sessions. The quality range of 3 wav levels and 1 mp3 is good. The features are excellent but the controls are very compact and take a good deal of getting used to.

The only downside I feel is the short battery life. Using 2 AA alkaline batteries I can get 2-3 hours of recording time and then the recorder dies while there is still a lot of juice in the batteries for other applications. So I presently have a collection of about 50 AA batteries which are still good for running toys and flashlights but don't have high enough voltage for the H4. This is a small inconvenience - overall the unit is excellent.

Zoom H4 Review

Great handy little device, very easy to use. I just used it this past week for recording audio to the short film I was involved in making. Uploading files into computer took about 20 minutes, but that could be due to the file sizes. I recommend this recorder for anyone interested in audio or wanting to learn more about audio.

The H4 offers high quality recording, and it does not distort with loud noise (drum set, etc). It is very easy just to pick up and record with. You can literally just turn it on, hit record, and go. You don't have to worry about accidentally recording over any saved material or anything. Play back is a breeze too; very self explanitory.

I agree with all of the usual complaints (SD card tough to remove, jog wheel kind of hard to use, and the whole unit feels a little flimsy. I also found out that when using phantom power, you have to power both mic inputs. So you cannot use a dynamic mic and condensor mic at the same time. Not too big of a deal, since the built in mics do a fine enough job.

I have had a terrible time getting Cubase to work right. It was frustrating downloading drivers over and over agian, only to keep getting new error messages. No instructions are included for Cubase, so you pretty much have to figure out how to use it on your own.

Overall, it's a great unit. The short comings do not take away from the fact that this is truly an amazing piece of equipment. Amazon seems to have the best price on it

Original sound with the H-4

After having read many of the reviews about this little nifty machine I decided to give it a try in a direct-sound production as the main recorder for dialog. In order to be compatible with audio suites we decided to record in the 48 KHz / 24 Bit mode. I know that the machine is not specifically designed for film/TV field recording, but it did its job very well.

First I had to calibrate the H-4 with the FP-33 to see where my levels were, so I set the IN 1&2 switches both to "L" and then calibrated the 1 KHz tone to -24dB on the H-4. Why so low? The limiter of the SHURE mixer works OK for analog, but clearly overshoots the 0 dB limit of any digital recorder thus causing distortion / clipping.
The dialogues came through crisp and clear, but I still had to watch peaks since the limiter of the H-4 did not catch them accordingly. I still haven't figured out if the built-in limiter only works for the internal mike (MIC) or works as well on the input (IN 1&2).

I live and work in Costa Rica, so sometimes the "Latin Way" interferes with the normal production logistics which I was used to in Germany and the States.
Production forgot to buy batteries, so they gave me a strip of regular Panasonic Blue-Ones. BEWARE! A set of two lasted about 10 minutes, just enough for one scene, without risking the recorder going "off-line" in the middle of a take. We barely made the first morning (exterior shooting), and then got some decent alkaline AAs.

Cons:

Overall I am surprised by the excellent quality of the recorded audio. I even did a couple of recordings of a Mariachi band, using the built-in microphones, and at home I was astounded by the crispness and the stereo-field resolution.

So, leave your bulky machines at home, and start using the H-4 for your field recording. ... and you'll save about US$ 750 compared to other digital SD-recorders.
Don't forget the clapper, because otherwise you are going to be in deep trouble trying to sync your audio to your video in post-production.

Great recorder great price

I bought this recorder to record live classical music with external microphones that require phantom power. While understanding the interface and menu items was a bit embarrassed relatively easy to use. We what really amazing on this recorder the clarity of sound, wide frequency range and the ease transport of audio files to my mac. Some guests may not like some features of this recorder - which is made of plastic, SD card and batteries a little hard to reach, etc.. - But for the money a package of just amazing. I've been really happy with it.

Good product but not compatible with my powered condenser mics

I bought this product from a friends recommendation and reading reviews. It is the only small (hand held) digital stereo field recorder of these types with XLR external mics connections. I bought the unit so I could plug my DPA powered condenser microphones using the XLR connections.

The Zoom comes with phatom power but the DPA's have there own preamp and power supply which is a higher voltage system. I am getting distortion even when the input gain is turned down. The signal coming from the mics is at line level. These powered mics don't seem compatible with the Zoom H4

first the bad :
the switches (side-panel on the right) for "gain lo-med-hi" seem easy to break and are difficult to put in the middle position.
the pushwheel (also on the right side-panel) seems fragile too.
i find it very difficult to remove the SD card (it doesn't pop up high enough), so rather than use tweezers i just leave it in there and transfer the files over USB.
the usage is awkward at first, you navigate using the center button and the pushwheel, which almost requires two hands.
the center joystick button has two menu-navigation purposes: pushing it in is basically a back/clear button, and pulling it down gives you access to the input menu. the rest of the menu-navigation (and selection) is done by the pushwheel.
maybe this is a good thing because it allows you to still use the joystick to control the music (play/pause/record/ffwd/rew) WHILE you're navigating the menus.
unfortunately, many of the menus don't wrap-around (so if you scroll to the end of a list before deciding you want the first item, then you have to scroll all the way back to the beginning).
the volume wheel controls the 3.5mm "headphone" output, but has no effect on the 3.5mm "line" output; no big deal, you can get around that using a 2-dollar splitter (so two people can listen with headphones, for example).

now the good :
the product does everything it says it does; i find the recording quality excellent considering the size and cost of this thing.
i also use it as a headphone amp for my electric guitar (of the 50 built-in effects, there are at least five that i use frequently).
battery life is good, you'll want rechargeable batteries ofcourse.
once i got used to the user-interface, i found this product very satisfying.
although it could use some design improvements, i consider this almost essential equipment for a musician, and very useful for a bunch of other people, including bootleggers, podcasters, lecturers/students, or anyone who wants decent quality digital recordings for under 300$.

Great Digital Recorder too few tracks

This is a great product. It produces results that rival a recording studio when you use the direct inputs. The microphones do not produce studio quality sound reproduction but if you connect a couple of Shure SM58 microphones you can get close. This recorder is small and easy to use after an hour or so of familiarizing yourself with the manual.

This is a great recorder. A little complicated to use unless you mix sound and effects; I don't use the effects much, the recording quality is great. It is important to know that you can only record 2 mono tracks simultaneously, or 1 stereo track. I wish it had more input tracks for recording, but I knew this going into the purchase so I am very happy with it.

Great recorder for Price

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I made a lot of research before buying this and then did not surprise me much. Overall I'm very pleased, I got there I was expecting. Sounds good and even if the controls are a bit hard-working, non difficult to use. One thing that everyone should be aware of audio files that are not time and date printed in any way. If you need or want that we should look elsewhere. It annoying, but not a failure for my use. The price goes for the H4, I think it's a really good deal for the quality you get.

Excellent,don't look any further

Mulultiple uses. One of the most flexible digital devices out there. Welcome to the future. SD card makes slot it totally practical and pragmatic.

This is just exactly what i needed, it works very well, and its handy for my daily performance. 5 stars all the way....

Very nice (good sounding mic preamps), and it does the job. And the price is terrific. The only thing I would change is aspects of the interface -- having to toggle the little switch-thingy around to set input levels (for example) is tricky; not being able to set levels for both channels simultaneously, stuff like that. But all things considered I'm very pleased with the product.

Record cleanly, and the built-in directional microphones are surprisingly. I, too, as that is not registered pi something else, if you need to record on the fly during the execution of another function. Understand the different functions and the mode to navigate the menus took a bit of practice, but once you understand it, it's pretty slick. I used to build my background and the library of effects, including gunshots, without distortion. If you need a portable recorder quality for whatever reason, this the final one to get.

Zoom H4-Excellent device

Monday, September 21, 2009

Good:

The small size, high quality sound and different recording formats make this an excellent tool for mobile field recording. The internal stereo microphone produces an image very good audio, XLR inputs and make it usable with any pro audio microphone. I was surprised by all the on-board effects, mixing, a capacity to bounce. I can manually set the gain and input levels to adapt to any environment. The basic registration simple, requires only three steps to "roll tape".

Bad:
This is a device of four-track, but can only record two tracks at a time. The switches are small and the interface takes some 'juggling to get the functionality advanced. Also, if you're not using this device for the cinema, the internal clock does sync with precision clocks DV ... It is evident during the long and requires stretching or shrinking the audio track to match the video track (a simple step, but cumbersome).

Zoom H4 It does the job!

I purchased the Zoom H4 Handy Recorder to use to record voice over for video production. It has work great in this task giving quality voice tracks. I have to explain to the people that I am getting voice track from that it is not a stun gun or tazer then they relax and we have the recording.

As a member of a Choir I have great fun using The Zoom H4.
It creates possibillities to make mp3-files to share with the members, who can't read the notes. Ot also make overall recordings to share with the audience.
Deliverence was quick - impressive!

I love this recorder. This one thing I do not like it locks microphones ( came during the recording, although not happened - yet) and that there are 48V powered microphones with the batteries of the Work It (success, although I do not think) in the directions. The button seems a little failed. Apart from that a great big unit with a good sound.

Love it! Zoom H4 Recorder

Very pleased and happy with this product. My only complaint is that the casing seems a little cheap and not very durable. But the sound quality is excellent and it is very user-friendly. My husband and I are musicians and need to record ourselves several times a week, and this product is perfect for that. I would recommend buying a larger SD card, so you can record for a longer period of time.

I play in a band and record our practices and live performances. The zoom does everything we need to perfect our sound. I did buy the 2 gig memory card, as the one supplied is not big enough. When recording live the placement is everything, so try different positions to get it just right www.theplanbband.com

Zoom H4 - Get This and Start Playing!

I will not go into details because that much I believe in it and go!
As the recording I do, creativity Spontaneous comes when you do not have a CD burner.

This unit just exactly what I want. To be able to record on the fly a valuable tool for anyone wanting to easily reference material later for reasons of study or songwriting.

Bonus great this unit , He can replace the batteries. Yup, after extensive research, not to mention names, but cost s been a big factor, similar devices have been limited:) about two, this and the other.

What sold me was this one has batteries that can change themselves. The other, you have to return them. No, Memory, Maximum number of paper 2GB.

Abundance for recording Wav to upload your computer. Cubase comes with it, USB cable, windscreen for x / y microphones. Oh, be placed on a tripod too! The downside Small LCD plastic case feels cheap. Solution Easy, buy a lot by chance it!

Overall, what for the price. Further information can visit their website. Much more detail l Really The manual should provide some nice spare time reading, if necessary.

The price better stand-alone recorder

One can endlessly to discuss technical details and combination products, but it was just had to make one can.

Before we get and bought, we kindly blind test done. Piano, bass, cello and drums, recorded with the Zoom and once with microphones that are twice as expensive as the other semi-pro zoom plus a recorder. Then we have made with 2 monitor speakers to the test. Alternately with an evaluation even in terms of space and transparency. Participating were the 4 musicians plus 2 G plus Evaluation: durchg without mixer with mp3. The sound score was 58 to 42 is the professional equipment.Transparency and the room was 54 to 46 as Zoom!

Everyone agreed:As far as aural precision for the money really is too little. The smear is definitely the mechanics and the display.Go! Use is made of plastic, the recorder zoom times down. The joystick like a leaf in the wind. Even cheapest game consoles are better off.The display has such small letters and symbols, dass man to read them more than advice!

But are the basic settings once programmed, then you need only the relatively large eigendlich recorder button. A small remote control not bad.The connection Is easily via USB to the PC and Mac. It is included in the package, makes the whole more attractive. One last look at the manual. Even tiny writing, the learning curve because there are better. I have pulled down to me by the company's manual zoom and printed via PDF. Thus, We can write many notes in the margin and thus a practical manual.

Good performers throughout

The Zoom H4 very well done recording sessions and live music. The range of quality 1 and 3 levels of WAV and MP3. The features are excellent, but the controls are very compact and take good deal. The only downside that I realized the short battery life with 2 AA alkaline batteries choose take 2-3 hours and then died during the recording still plenty of juice in the batteries of other applications. What I now have a collection of about 50 AA batteries, which are still the construction toys and torches, but not high enough voltage to H4. This small problem - the complexity excellent unit.

Limiting instructions for Zoom H4

Amazing audio interface, it has great possibilities if you can get past the written instructions. The clarity and versatility have given me great potential.
Do not buy the memory that is suggested. You will waste you money and shipping fees.

I am very pleased with my H4. I actualyl use it for memos, then play it into a speech recognition package. The results have been great. The housing is fairly cheap - I agree. Menus are sometimes annoying. I wish I could record mono. The extra inputs are very handy!

I'm very glad it also serves as a card reader!
There are definitely higher quality units out there for portable recorders. However, "for the money" I have been completely satisfied.

Zoom H4 Great and Sweet Product

Thursday, September 17, 2009

I do not want to repeat it others have written. This product is not as ugly and flimsy as other people have written. I do not know what they are looking for. A tank or a tape recorder!

I use it for mobile recordings for my podcast. At least I plan to. But for now I am using it to record my 2 year old. I can place it on a table where he can't see it and it will record him with incredible audio quality.

The built in mics are stellar. You can't beat the price. I was considering higher priced units but this one is absolutely perfect.

Panel LCD a little small, but it works well. Not very difficult to use. Read the manual once or twice. You will need a three pin female XLR to 1 / 4 "XLR cable to connect a microphone with XLR output. The foam windscreen is not included Big for the situation of wind. I made one myself of eco - fur from a fabric store and works great. There need to spend $ 60.00 for a windshield. AA batteries do not last very long in order to keep a lot of extras. I use A / C adapter when possible. You get a lot of money, XLR inputs and 48V and 24V phantom power. I did not use phantom power yet. Somewhere I read the AA batteries can only handle up to 24V phantom power and you need a / c power to 48V. The Numbers don''t know how accurate that. This a great product, but I heard H4n even better if you can spend more money.

Go to Zoom H4n

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Good product, HOWEVER it has serious sync issues.

When trying to sync the audio from the H4 to video, the sound lags after a few minutes and continues to lag more out of sync every few minutes after that. So you have to make several tedious adjustments in post.

A great device for live recording but 2 things. First, there is the new and massively improved Zoom H4n which does so much more and simplifies a lot of the previous complications. Second I noticed as with any other important audio recordings you make, the better the SD card the better sound of the recording and less sound problems with this unit. I suggest using the 2GB SanDisk Ultra II or Extreme III cards in this unit (the difference in sound is amazing) and is the same with the H4n but it has greater capacity and can take a much larger GB card. The extra GB in the H4n alone is worth it especially for using the 96khz 24bit best sound process.

Has all the features I wanted, some complicated user interface

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I looked at the Edirol, the H4, and another similar device. The H4 had all the features I wanted: built-in microphones, external MIC jack (XLR and 1 / 4 "both), the batteries interchangeable, and, above all, the phantom power.

Phantom power was the clincher for me. The Edirol does not, then using that would take away with her another piece of material. Also worth noting: this true 48-volt phantom power. Very well done. I only have one complaint on the H4, and this UI ridiculous.

The H4 features two modes main players: normal and "studio".

The mode normal fundamental and useful. You can select the bit rate and the recording format. The device can record in either WAV or MP3. Non too complicated.

"Recording studio" bill as a 4-way mode of study track record, but that description misleading. What does it really mean you can establish tracks (or a channel or two) next to tracks already existing, up to a limit of four. The device really had only one or two channels at once. Since the four tracks are just a creation of the software in any case, why arbitrarily limited to only four Maybe four at a time was the PI the device can play simultaneously. I do not know.

Anyway, my point that the mode the recording studio, as he can do a million things with a user interface ridiculously complicated. Simply do not You can use the device in this way, without the manual open in front of you. Also, since you must work with the controls and children with a small screen simply too complicated. These are the characteristics pi suitable for a remedial software on a workstation real. I can not shake the feeling that Samsung has just added this mode so there would be no more stuff right on the outside of the box.

But if you take my advice and just not use the mode the recording studio, is it a beautiful piece of technology.

My first recorder it's working well

Monday, September 14, 2009

This is my first handheld recorder. Been thinking about buying one for a long time. I haven't been using this one for long but it's up until now at least met all my demands.

I was a bit skeptical that the sound would be very good on any recorder in this price range. I'm using it for a songwriting group who meet to share lyrics & melodies of our efforts. We record each effort then make copies to give to everyone to work towards enhancing the song in their own time. We are all very pleased with the sound quality, and so far it has been easy to record and play back. There is a bit of a learning curve on the mixing and production steps after that, but it is do-able. My only disappointment is that the screen is small and the text inside it is waaaaayyyy too small. Why didn't they make that a bit larger? I can work with it under good lighting, but with dim lighting it is almost impossible. I use a magnifying glass for that. Other than that one issue, it was a great purchase. It is VERY portable and produces high quality recordings. I am extremely happy that after researching a lot of similar products, we chose this one.

Zoom H4 Excellent Value!

I am very satisfied with the features and the sound of H4. Convenient to have the stereo pair of microphones ready at the touch of a button even if you need to be very sensitive to movement, vibration and wind noise. The mode 4 track provides some great features like a track, select a tuner and effects, although not can record more of 2 tracks at once. The effects of profits are actually available in both 2 track or 4 mode track-simulator microphone limiter menu entry.

Gain settings are a bit clunky (three medium-low and high settings), but in reality very nice not to think too much about setting the gain.

The recorder has the ability to record in surround sound and can record a voice from across the room. It is not the easiest to operate, but includes a detailed manual. Small enough to fit in your pocket but not so discreet looking if you are trying to hide it from the conversation. I saw it online for $100 more and checked Amazon.com and bought it. It was a wise purchase.

Finally, the battery life was better than expected and I was pleased come with all necessary accessories (tripod adapter, windscreen, memory card). Cubase was a nice bonus.I can not say I put this head to head with other similar portable recorders, but I like the setup on this microphone and microphones seem to be very sensitive and transparent.

Zoom H4 is a Great portable recorder!

As soon as I received the Zoom H4, I read the quick start instructions and started recording. All you have to do push record and start recording. Great sound! I am a guitarist and singer and concert with my band about 4 times a month. I record every time we play and found some really good recordings. The fine built in microphone of the sound, but I especially like the function of external mic input. I get better sound with a pair of condenser microphones. Has XLR, so 1 / 4 "input. It also has phantom power. I'm stoked with my H4.

I am amazed at the quality of the recordings and the relative ease of use. Once you get it straight that the jog dial is on the side and not the front things are pretty clear.

Zoom H4 Exactly what it is

H4 has a great feature. It simulates studio microphones. I can use it to record my tracks. It has replaced my RE-20 as my portable studio mic.

There are some complaints about the complexity that should be taken as valid if you're not used to working with pro audio equipment. If it is not surprising that you have to press the record button twice, then ignore those complaints. I agree that the design of interface does not the best, but internally consistent I once had familiarity with it, I felt much better.

My favorite feature surprise that if you are using as an audio interface powered via USB.

Battery life rather short, so invest in quality rechargeable.

Zoom H4 Excellent Recorder device

I love this recorder. The only things that I do not like there some blocks for the microphones (which might come off during recording, although not happened - yet) and that does not work on 48V powered microphones with batteries ( need to enter the draft, although I do not think it says in the directions ). Very convenient recorder

I bought a Zoom H4 to replace an old cassette deck awkwardly at our church. It does everything the old cassette recorder has done, and much more. Very semple to use, record in many format, trasfer easy to computer for editing or copiing file audio. The quality sound surprisingly good for a small device, and also through the construction of the recording microphones do not evil. The only reason for not giving five stars that the construction of plastic a bit cheap and the included audio CD with the software was defective and can not be installed. Overall, a very nifty little device.
